Sgraffito

Sgraffito is one of the oldest decorative techniques in ceramics. The name comes from the Italian sgraffiare, “to scratch”, but potters were carving lines, zigzags and spirals into damp clay more than 7,000 years ago. In our Sofia studio we carve each piece by hand: sunbursts, flowing waves and abstract patterns cut through the surface, set against bold fields of glaze in cobalt blue, mustard yellow and moss green. The contrast between the carved line and the depth of colour gives every plate and vessel its own rhythm. The pieces are made for everyday use, at home or on a chef’s pass. Sgraffito is made on request: tell us the shapes, sizes and colours you have in mind, and we will send you a proposal and a price. Read more about the history of the technique in our Journal.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1083/8743/4826/collections/the-7-000-year-old-technique-shaping-06.jpg?v=1791645965
